El rey andaba de pueblo en pueblo buscando novia, y en todos los pueblos preguntaba cuál era la muchacha más pobre y más rica; pero nadie entendía esta pregunta.

Andando así, el rey llegó al pueblo en donde vivía Rosa.  Como en todas sus visitas, empezó el rey por llamas a la más rica.

La muchacha rica había quedado huérfana, casi al mismo tiempo que Rosa; pero sus padres, en lugas de hacerla que trabajara, le habían dejado criados que la sirvieran.  Sabedora de que el rey la iba a visitar se vistió muy elegante.  Se pintó la cara y los labios.

Poco después llegó el rey y se quedó a solas con ella, la besó y se le pintaron los labios de colorete.

Por más coqueterías que la muchacha hacía para enamorar al rey, su majestad se moría de fastidio.  Tomó el rey un polvo de tobaco, y al dar un estornudo con el rapé, se le saltó un botón del traje, y le pidió a la muchacha que se lo cosiera; pero la muchacha, como no sabía coser, le dió un pinchazo en el estómago.

The king walked from town to town looking girlfriend, and all the people wondering what the girl was poorer and richer, but no one understood this question.
