La Apuesta (Spanish)
Un erizo estaba tranquilamente tomando el sol cuando vio aparecer ante él a la señora liebre. Esta nada más verlo empezó a burlarse de él.
-Qué, señor erizo? -le decía-, y si echáramos una carrerita? Parece que te veo en bueno forma, a lo mejor me ganabas. Apostaría contigo veinte duros, aceptas?
-Desde luego, señora liebre. Mañana mismo haremos una carrera. Venga aquí a esta misma hora y veremos quién gana a quién.
-En mi vida he oído decir una tontería más grande -dijo la liebre-, ya puedes prepararte a perder los veinte duros porque seguro que gano yo.
El erizo no dijo nada y la dejó marchar. Tan pronto como vio que la liebre se había ido, el animalito llamó a un erizo amigo suyo y le dijo:
-Compadre, quieres que le ganemos veinte duros a la liebre?
-Hombre, claro, pero cómo? Qué hay que hacer?
-Muy sencillo, echaremos una carrera y quien gane tendrá los veinte duros.
-Desgraciado: y tú piensas ganarle a la liebre?
-Lo que yo pienso es engañar a esa presumida sabelotodo. Mira, haremos una cosa: yo fingiré emprender la carrera con ella y me quedaré atrás en seguida; tú, desde un principio, te habrás colocado al otro lado del campo; entonces cuando llegue la liebre al otro extremo del terreno se encontrará contigo; como nos parecemos tanto será incapaz de darse cuenta de la superchería y le habremos ganado los veinte duros.
-Me parece una treta estupenda- contestó el otro erizo.
La liebre se reía a más y mejor mientras le decía al erizo colocado a su lado dispuesto a emprender la carrera:
- Señor erizo, tenga bien a punto los veinte duros porque en menos de un minuto se los habré ganado.
-Eso ya se verá- contestó filosóficamente el erizo.
El erizo dio la señal de partida, la liebre salió veloz como el viento, y en menos de un minuto se plantó al otro lado del campo, pero cuál no sería su sorpresa al encontrarse allí con el señor erizo, y no con cara de cansado precisamente.
- Señora liebre, en eso de correr aún hay quien te gana. Vengan los veinte duros y a presumir a otra parte. Vamos! No dudarás, verdad?
La liebre con las orejas gachas sacó los veinte duros de debajo de una piedra y se los dio al erizo. Luego se fue a su casita y estuvo encerrada dentro casi un año. No se atrevía ni a salir. Se moría de vergüenza sólo de pensar en lo que se iban a reír de ella los otros animales cuando se enterasen.
